North Tyneside Council Measles Advice

Outstanding GCSE Results at Churchill Community College Again!

Churchill Community College in Wallsend is celebrating its best ever GCSE results in Year 11.

70% of students gained 5 or more A*-C grades at GCSE, including English and Maths with many achieving 8 or more. This is another year where results for the students have improved significantly and the college maintains its position amongst the very highest performing schools both in North Tyneside and across the country.

When many schools are expressing concern about variations in Maths and English results, Churchill has seen even further improvement in both subjects.

Headteacher David Baldwin, said, 'We are delighted with the results the students have achieved. In almost all subjects students have out-performed their target grades with 70% gaining 5 or more A*-C grades including English and Maths. In addition the amount of progress they have made across their 5 years with us is absolutely outstanding. 92% of Year 11 made expected progress in English, nationally the figure is 70%. 58% of our students made greater than expected progress in English and nationally the figure is 30%. In Maths 83% made expected progress and 43% made greater than expected progress against national figures 70 and 30% respectively.’

There are some fabulous results for individual students. 15 students achieved between 5 and 11 A*/A grades at GCSE.

Dillon Blevins, Natalie Brown, Will Clasper, Jonathan Coulthard, Rebecca Cowley, Neve Flowers, Micaela Mendes, Luke Oldfield, Connor Peebles, Jack Ross , James Stenhouse, Ben Trinder-Bywater, Joshua Vasey, Lee Whittaker, Ryan Waterson

Students were thrilled with their results and were confidently confirming their places in Sixth Form for September knowing Churchill has also had their best ever Post-16 results this summer which placed the college in  the top schools for Post-16 education in North Tyneside and the wider region.

Head of School, Elaine Riley, told us, ' Students know they are well taught and supported at Churchill; that is why they stay with us Post-16 following their successes at GCSE. Today, we have the strongest set of results that we have ever had. There is a fantastic number of A*s and As but also many subjects where 90+% of students have gained A*-C grades. Our Spanish, Science, Art and ICT results are particularly strong. In Spanish and ICT at GCSE one in every 3 students achieved an A* or A grade. I am incredibly proud of all our students and their results.’

Students celebrated with staff, parents and college governors by having a ‘Harry Potter’ themed exam results celebration day, arriving to a red carpet, with staff dressed as characters from the much-loved novels, a magic starry sky, life sized characters from the films, cobwebs, spiders, an owl called Hedwig, Bertie Bots magic beans, magic potions, wands, broomsticks, a dining table at Hogwarts, balloons and banners.

Jill Huxtable, Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for raising achievement and progress said ‘Students have done fantastically well. Days like today where we celebrate their success with them and all have a bit of fun together are the reward for all of their hard work and the efforts of staff in teaching and supporting them.’ Churchill has built on its success every year in the last 8 years. Last summer, OfSTED recognised the amazing progress by grading the college as Outstanding across the board.
