Whilst there are no statutory skills prospective Governors should have, a Governor Skills Audit was undertaken in January 2015 and the Governing body is particularly looking for people with experience of procurement/purchasing, premises and facilities management and links with local businesses.  The Governing body has produced an information sheet (View/Download) to help you to understand clearly the role of a governor.  You might also be interested in reading about What School Governors do

You must be over 18 to become a school or college governor. There’s no minimum age to be a student governor of a college.

You can help:

  • * the school with its strategy
  • * hold the head teacher to account for a school’s performance
  • * make sure the school’s budget is properly managed
